This garden and the associated plaza terrace is one of the lovely treasures which can be found in the Dunedin Botanic Gardens. It provides visitors with a wide variety of plants and shrubs from the Mediterranean region and also an expansive vista over the North Dunedin area from the plaza terrace.
The Mediterranean Garden was opened by the Governor General of New Zealand, Sir Anand Satyanand, on 12 December 2010.
The concept of the garden was the vision of the late Mick Field, who was a manager of the Dunedin Parks and Gardens in the 1990s and who was also a president of the Dunedin Amenities Society for many years until 2015.
We include the following video presentation made by Mick in advance of the construction in early 2000. You can view the video by pressing on the following link:

Present day photos of the garden and the terrace are included for interest. It is well worth a visit and to sit on one of the many park benches on the terrace plaza on a sunny afternoon and enjoy looking out over North Dunedin and the Leith Valley towards Flagstaff (the mountain) in the distance.
