We are pleased to report that the seat at the top of Flagstaff, recently damaged, has now been repaired and installed on new foundations.
The Society, together with the ‘Wednesday 6.15 Pub Runners’, undertook to effect a proper solution of anchoring the seat, in difficult ground conditions, in the last week of February 2025.
This was achieved by hand excavation for substantial footings and anchoring the seat into reinforced concrete foundations. All material had to be carried manually to the site from the carpark at the ‘bullring’ on the Whare Flat Road, including 20 No x 20kg bags of premixed concrete, 90 litres of water, reinforcing steel, timbers and tools. The Runners made short work of ferrying the loads to the top of the hill.
Christopher Hyndman and Glen Coster did the excavation work and installed the seat on a voluntary basis.
The seat is now very firmly secured and should be a feature for generations. It is worth making a trip up the Pineapple Track and to take a few moments to sit on the seat, cogitate and marvel at the stupendous view over Dunedin City and the surrounding areas.
We in Dunedin are lucky to have this splendid environment on our doorstep.
The Society would like to acknowledge with thanks the efforts put in by those volunteers who successfully made this happen.
Robin Hyndman (President of the Dunedin Amenities Society)
