ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TOWN BELT TRAVERSE COMPLETED 16 APR 2023

The 2023 Town Belt Traverse happened on a beautiful autumnal Dunedin day. The weather was glorious and the walk along the Queens Drive showed the Town Belt, and indeed Dunedin, at its stunning best.

The Finest Urban Walk in the World.  Over 600 people, adults and children many with dogs, participated in what has become the signature event for the Society.  At the conclusion of the walk, and over a cup of tea and coffee and a sausage bun, there were many positive comments about the Town Belt, the Traverse and the good fortune that we Dunedin citizens enjoy by living in our environment.

The Traverse is a serious day out.  Being over 8kms long and up and down dale, it makes for a challenging bit of exercise. Participants are typically well satisfied with their exercising efforts and justly proud of our unique reserve which provides a dress circle for the city.

Many businesses and people supported the Society with advertising, prizes and donations.  We are very grateful to all for their generosity and for their appreciation of the Society’s efforts in organising  the Town Belt Traverse.

This is the fourth iteration of the Town Belt Traverse which typically is undertaken every other year.

And here is a selection of photos taken on the day:

Registering at the starting point at the Southern Cemetery near the Oval

A popular attraction; the restored Mornington cable car in Mornington Park

The memorial cairn in Jubilee Park commemorating the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887 and also the birthplace of the Dunedin Amenities Society.

Walkers arriving at the Olveston check point

Directions at the Prospect Park (The Clear) checkpoint

Walkers on the final leg through Woodhaugh Gardens

The end point of the Traverse in Woodhaugh Gardens

Walkers queuing up for well-earned refreshments at the canteen in Woodhaugh Gardens

Part of the crowd at the prize-giving ceremony at the end point of the traverse in Woodhaugh Gardens
